Within the Sacred Valley of the Incas near Cuzco, Ollantaytambo is famous for its Incan architecture. Steep terraces lead to a highly defensible fortress where local forces defeated the conquistadors in battle in 1536. Inside the fortress is also a ceremonial center, the stones for which were transported from over 6km away.

On the route to Machu Picchu, Ollantaytambo is one of the most visited places in Peru. This creates both opportunities and threats for the local population. Much of the wealth generated by tourism is not seen by the traditional communities of the area, who can often only access low-paid and informal employment.

The Project

Together with the Plan Wallata project, SPI is working with local female textile artisans to bring them more economic opportunities. Local women have been trained to make new products using the traditional back-strap loom techniques, as well as how to better run their businesses.


Achievements

  • The artisans have taken part in craft fairs in Peru, and their products will be on sale in the Cuzco region soon!

The Big thing we have learned

  • Huge potential exists within local communities and local women. They need the knowledge and resources to realize it!
